When dad lived in Woonsocket, he used to visit the Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey where the Cistercian nuns would make bread. Back then, they were commited to being silent and having no contact with people outside of their abbey. So to buy the bread, one would place money on a wooden turn table and ring the bell. A sister on the other side of the wall would place the bread on the table and turn it to hand to the customer. This way the sister was not making any contact with the customer. It’s how they would make money. Since that time, one of the Pope’s removed the requirement of total isolation. Now that the nuns can interact with people, they have a lovely gift shop where they still sell items they make: jams, honey, & chocolate. Sadly, they no longer make bread.

For the past couple of years, dad has gotten to know one of the nuns, Sister Peter. She is lovely. She will talk your ear off if you let her. Having a scottish accent, I did not realize how much time flew by. She wanted to meet dad’s grandkids, hence, we stopped by. It was our lucky day, not only did we meet Sister Peter and bought candy, we got to see baby lambs! I really wanted to bring one home.

That abbey sounds like it was a fun place to stop! Too bad they don’t make bread anymore… I love homemade bread! Those lambs are so cute!
